Public Services

By registering for an ArcWeb Public Services account, you get free access to a subset of ArcWeb Services for one year. This free program allows you to develop personal Web-enabled applications for mapping, routing, geocoding, place finding, and spatial queries.

Schools and other educational institutes can access ArcWeb Services for free through the Students and Educators program.

If you intend to use ArcWeb Services for commercial or government use, you need to register for a Commercial account by purchasing a block of credits.

Accessing Public Services

As a SOAP user, you can access Account Info Web Service, Authentication Web Service, Address Finder Web Service, Map Image Web Service, Place Finder Web Service, Spatial Query Web Service, Route Finder Web Service, and Utility.

As an OpenLS user, you can access Geocoding/Reverse Geocoding Service, Presentation Service, and Routing Service.

As an ArcWeb Explorer JavaScript, ArcWeb Explorer Flex, or REST user, you have full access to the APIs.

As a J2ME Mobile Toolkit user, you can download and use the ArcWeb J2ME Mobile Toolkit to access Address Finder Web Service, Map Image Web Service, Spatial Query Web Service, and Route Finder Web Service.

Students and Educators

ArcWeb Services for Students and Educators is a free public services program geared toward students, instructors, K–12 schools, colleges, libraries, museums, and nonprofit educational research institutes. This service allows you to take advantage of a wide selection of ArcWeb Services (including global imagery, aerial photos, and demographic data) and functionality (such as mapping, routing, and spatial query) to create Web-enabled GIS applications for use in classrooms or research.

Students and Educators is available through a one-year subscription and can be accessed via the APIs listed above.

Getting more information

Log in to the ArcWeb site and use the Service Finder to see details about the services and service types available to you as a Public Services user. (If you do not log in to the ArcWeb site before using the Service Finder, all ArcWeb services and service types appear, some of which are only available with a paid subscription to ArcWeb Services.)

See Getting started with Public Services to learn how to sign up and start using Public Services.

If you have any questions about using Public Services, visit the ArcWeb user-to-user discussion forum. The forum brings together Public Services users for collaborative online discussions and code sharing. You also have access to online support through support.esri.com. The support site includes technical articles about specific issues with ArcWeb Services.

Understanding the restrictions of Public Services

Public Services is only for developing personal applications. It is not for commercial use. The program does not include access to ESRI Support Services or the full set of functionality and services available with a paid subscription to ArcWeb Services. As a Public Services user you are limited to 1,000 transactions per day. In addition, you cannot create commercial applications; build custom services; locate wireless devices; batch geocode; create print-quality demographic reports; calculate drive time polygons; geocode IP addresses and phone numbers; and access premium services such as detailed business listings, custom weather, and live traffic. All this functionality is available with Commercial ArcWeb Services. At any time, you can switch your Public Services account and applications to a Commercial account by purchasing a block of credits.

Renewing your account

You may renew your Public Services account by completing the Public Services registration with your existing Public Services user name. You have access to Public Services for one year from the latest renewal date. You may renew at any time and as many times as you would like.
